Asphalt is a complex black brown mixture composed of hydrocarbons with different molecular weights and their non-metallic derivatives. It is a type of high viscosity organic liquid, mostly in the form of liquid or semi solid petroleum, with a black surface and soluble in carbon disulfide and carbon tetrachloride.
Asphalt is an organic cementitious material that is waterproof, moisture-proof, and corrosion-resistant. Asphalt can be mainly divided into coal tar pitch, petroleum pitch and natural pitch: coal tar pitch is a by-product of coking. Petroleum asphalt is the residue of crude oil distillation. Natural asphalt is stored underground, some forming mineral layers or accumulating on the surface of the earth's crust. Asphalt is mainly used in industries such as coatings, plastics, rubber, and paving roads.
The upstream of the asphalt industry is petrochemical, coal, and modifiers and emulsifiers, while the downstream is highways, waterproof building materials, airport construction, and municipal engineering road construction.
Asphalt is a hydrophobic material that is impermeable and almost insoluble in water, acetone, ether, and dilute ethanol. It is soluble in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride, and sodium hydroxide.
